The Wachau classification system is as follows:
1. Steinfeder (maximum of 11.5% abv)
2. Federspiel (11.5% abv-12.5% abv)
3. Smaragd (Min 12.5% abv, max 9g/litre of residual sugars)
All wines produced in the Wachau fall under one of these categories in addition to the National Austrian Classification System.
